Level 2
ITRA 3 Year Certification
Dates: April 22 through 26, 2024
This is a 44 hour intermediate tactical rope operations course that meets the qualification standards for the level 2 certification through International Technical Rescue Association tactical rope curriculum. This is not a beginners course. Students must possess basic equipment and already be capable of rappelling, ascending rope, changing over from ascent to rappel and rappel to ascent, and passing a knot. Students must also be able to tie a suite of knots. There will be an entry assessment test the first morning to ensure all students meet the entry standards.
NOTE: The option to train / assess at the Level 1 - Rappel Master instead of Level 2 is also available. Level 1 entry test is different from Level 2 (see below). If interested in this option, please email Eddy Cartaya at [email protected].

Weather: Course will go rain, snow, or shine (safety stops called if lightning is observed). Come prepared to be outside most of the time (sunscreen, sunglasses, rain gear, etc.).
COVID: All instructors are vaccinated. We will have masks, and ample hand sanitizer on station if you need it. You are not required to wear a mask on rope unless you are actively performing a close quarters intervention with an unvaccinated subject. Have a mask on your person at the ready at all times.
Restrooms: There will be a porta-potty and hand washing station on site.
Water / Coffee: Please bring a Nalgene or water bottle. We will have water coolers with water and Gatorade on the tables at the tower. There will also be a large coffee dispenser and fixings on the porch. You may help yourself.
Food: Please advise if you have any food allergies or dietary restrictions. We will be catering in lunches from local vendors each day so you do not have to leave the site. If you have specific needs, please advise. This is for all 5 lunches and dinner on date of night operations. Otherwise, bring your own snacks to sustain you through the day.
Thursday BBQ: While not part of the course, we customarily host a BBQ for all participants Thursday night at the house by the training center. If you are staying local and need to drop off your rig and get a ride back for the BBQ, we can shuttle you.
Smoking: If you smoke, there will be designated butt cans and areas. Fire hazard is always being monitored. Please do not throw any butts on the ground at any time.
Firearms Safety: Starting on day 2, you will be wearing your duty weapon for the duration of the course. Weapons will be cleared by firearms instructors each morning, after lunch, and each time you return to the training area. If you have a chamber flag for your weapon, please bring it.
Live Fire: There will be a live fire training block. Please bring all range safety gear and ammunition for your duty weapon. If you will carry a SBR or short carbine, have ammunition for it as well.
Entry Skills Test: 10 knots (list to be provided) in 20 minutes. Ability to don a harness, climb up a single line 10 meters, pass a knot, perform a changeover to rappel, and perform a 10 meter rappel passing a knot on the way down, tie off the DCD (descent control device) for a hands free stop, changeover to ascent, and down climb 2 meters in 20 minutes, starting with all gear in a pack. (Tactical gear need NOT be worn.) (If taking L1 Rappel Master, you need only demonstrate the ability to don harness, rappel, and clear a jammed descender.)
Please make time to take a look at the following attached video links. They will help describe the basic aspects of your climbing system, the critical safety points we look for in the entry test, and an example of the tests.
